SPF – Rankings and Ratings Criteria

In this post I will go into detail on my personal score criteria to evaluate SPF Products and highlight some of my favourite ones.

#SPF Ranking Criteria

Each SPF product tested will have attributed an overall score and a corresponding ranking position. 

The Overall Score is an evaluation based on the product characteristics and my personal experience with it. It follows through a set of quantifiable variables presented bellow and the sum of the total points will give the final score. 

Please note that my scores are biased by my location (European Union), climate (cold and dry), skin type (sensitive oily acne prone) and complexion (light olive skin). 

The criteria metrics are grouped into 5 categories:

  • SPF Effectiveness
  • Ingredient List
  • Target group & Use cases
  • Wearability
  • Price point & Acessability 

SPF effectiveness

  • SPF factor strenght
    • 1 – Low (Less than 30 SPF)
    • 2 – Medium (30 to 50 SPF)
    • 3 – High (50+SPF)
  • Physical Filters
  • Chemical Filter
  • Modern and stable filters (1-Yes/0-No)
  • Broad-spectrum filters(1-Yes/0-No)
  • Water resistance capabilities(1- Yes/0 – No)

Ingredient List 

  • Focus of the product
    • Soothing
    • Hydration
    • Brightening
    • Antioxidants
    • Oil and acne control
  • Main actives besides the filters
  • Contains alcohol(1-No/0-Yes)
  • Contains fragrance and/or essential oils(1-No/0-Yes)

Target Group & Use cases

  • Cast/Tint
    • 0 – Very notivceable white Cast/wrong tint
    • 1 – light cast/slight tint difference
    • 2 – No cast/correct tint 
  • Sensitivity
    • 1 – No sensitivity
    • 0 – causes sensitivity
  • Pilling Off issues:
    • 0 – All the time 
    • 1 – Sometimes
    • 2 – No issue at all
  • Easiness in reapplication, using it under make up and with other products
    • 0 – Impossible
    • 1 – Somewhat difficult
    • 2 – No difficulty
    • 3 – Easy to apply  and improves the appearance of other products

Price point & Accessability

  • Quantity per unit
  • Price per unit
  • Price per ml 
  • Price category – based on the price distribution of my sample of products.
    • 0 – Expensive (20% highest priced)
    • 1 – Pricey (between 60% and 80% highest priced)
    • 2 – Average priced (between 40% and 60% highest priced )
    • 3 – Affordable (between the 20% and 40% highest priced)
    • 4 – Cheap (20% lowest priced) 
  • Accessability – measures the easiness and transaction costs of getting the product, such as:
      • Availability in the local drugstore
      • Availability in online importer at convenient prices
      • Payment of shipping rates, import taxes, insurance and positive exchange rate differences
      • Risk of broken packages or lost/changed orders
      • Shipping and deliverying times
    • Overall accessability score:
      • 0 – Inaccessible(there is no available online seller on adequate/affordable normal market prices)
      • 1 – Not very accessible(there are online sellers but the transaction costs are high)
      • 2 – Accessible with some costs (there are online sellers with standardized processes and without major costs, but the waiting and shipping times are very long)
      • 3 – Accessible (shipped and delivered within 7 days, without major costs)
      • 4 – Very Accessible (available on local drugstore)
